What Is An Employer’s Role In Supporting Mental Health At Work?

World Wellbeing Week provides an opportunity for businesses to reflect on how they support employee mental health.

Over the last few years, conversations around mental health have become far more open, and rightly so. However, many employers are still unsure where their responsibilities begin and end.

While employers are not expected to be counsellors or mental health professionals, they do play an important role in creating a workplace where people feel supported, listened to and able to access help when they need it.

Creating A Supportive Workplace Culture

One of the most important things an employer can do is create an environment where conversations are encouraged.

Managers do not need to have all the answers, but they should be approachable, empathetic and willing to listen.

Often, simply knowing that support is available can make a significant difference.

Putting The Right Support In Place

Managers are often the first people to notice when something is not quite right.

This could include:

  • Changes in behaviour
    • Increased absence
    • Reduced engagement
    • Missed deadlines
    • Withdrawal from colleagues

Providing managers with the confidence to have supportive conversations can help identify issues early and ensure employees receive appropriate support.

Practical Ways To Support Employee Wellbeing

Supporting mental health should not rely solely on good intentions.

Employers should consider whether their policies and working practices support employee wellbeing.

This may include:

  • Flexible working arrangements
    • Clear absence procedures
    • Return-to-work support
    • Employee wellbeing initiatives
    • Mental health awareness training

The goal is not to create more paperwork. It is to create clarity and consistency.

Supporting mental health at work is not about having all the answers.

It is about creating an environment where employees feel valued, supported and able to access help when they need it.
